בַּמֶּה דְבָרִים אֲמוּרִים, בִּזְמַן שֶׁהִיא כֶלִי. הָיְתָה פְחוּתָה וּפְקוּקָה בְקַשׁ, אוֹ מַחֲזֶקֶת אַרְבָּעִים סְאָה כְּדִבְרֵי חֲכָמִים, טֻמְאָה תַחְתֶּיהָ, בְּתוֹכָהּ, אוֹ עַל גַּבָּהּ, טֻמְאָה בוֹקַעַת וְעוֹלָה, בּוֹקַעַת וְיוֹרָדֶת. רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר וְרַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמְרִים, אֵין טֻמְאָה עוֹלָה לָהּ, אַף לֹא יוֹרֶדֶת מִמֶּנָּה. הָיְתָה גְבוֹהָה מִן הָאָרֶץ טֶפַח, טֻמְאָה תַחְתֶּיהָ, תַּחְתֶּיהָ טָמֵא. בְּתוֹכָהּ, אוֹ עַל גַּבָּהּ, כְּנֶגְדּוֹ עַד הָרָקִיעַ טָמֵא:

When is this the case? When it is a vessel. But if it were broken and plugged with straw or if it holds forty <i>Se'ah</i> according to the Sages, if there is impurity beneath it, inside it, or on top of it, the impurity pierces and rises, pierces and goes down. Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Shimon say, the impurity does not rise above it nor go down from it. If it was a handbreadth above the ground, if the impurity is beneath it, [everything] beneath it is impure. [If it was] inside it or on top of it, opposite it up to the firmament is impure.
